Trump EPA appointees want more air
pollution — that’s a very bad idea
Climate change garners most of
the headlines, but the Trump administration is pushing a much larger and
broader pro-pollution agenda whose latest manifestation is a push at the
EPA to overturn a long-established scientific consensus that
fine particulate pollution (colloquially “soot”) kills people.
This is critically important for
two main reasons.
One is that for decades the EPA
has been regulating various sources of particulate emissions and the science
around how harmful they are plays a role in driving how strict those
regulations become. The other is that particulate emissions play a key role in
the bureaucratic politics of climate change.
Because carbon dioxide emissions
are global and the consequences of climate change are also global, it is
generally hard to demonstrate that cutting a given source of greenhouse gas
emissions will have large benefits to Americans. But most regulations that
reduce carbon emissions also reduce much more localized soot — and taking into
account the fact that soot has a marked tendency to kill people who live nearby
the emissions sources is important to making the cost-benefit analysis math
work.

Contaminated underground water leads to
rise in many diseases
Citizens dwelling in the areas,
where use of contaminated underground water is prominent to meet the demand of
their basic needs, are on the verge of getting more prone to water pollution
related disorders as experts raise the alarm the regarding the city's
underground resource- contaminated by lethal toxin such as arsenic, nitrates
and fluorides in some parts of Delhi. Experts pointed that how much the city is
overdrawing its groundwater. The over-exploitation was to the extent of 27 percent
-that is, for every 100 litres that gets replenished, Delhiites draw out approx
127 litres. It's based on analysis of groundwater use between 2011 and 2013,
the latest year for which data is Available.
The arsenic contamination is not
widespread, but it may point to unacceptable ground pollution in the city,
expert informed. "Arsenic contamination has been found in some parts of
the Yamuna flood plains but it's still a rare occurrence. Though arsenic
pollution is considered geogenic (naturally occurring) in other parts of India,
some papers have attributed arsenic contamination to fly ash from thermal power
plants in Delhi.

China Grants Millions to Cities to Tackle Water Pollution
The Chinese government has announced that it will provide a handful of cities with additional funding to allow them to clean up their highly-polluted rivers and waterways. Approximately 20 cities were selected for the pilot scheme at the end of last year, with more being earmarked for future years if all goes well.
Each of the chosen cities will
receive an additional 600 million yuan (£68.7 million) per year until 2020 as
the government aims to clean up the “black and stinking” contamination of
certain rivers

Green Court Asks Pollution Control Board To
Prepare Noise Pollution Maps
The National Green Tribunal has
directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to prepare a noise
pollution map and remedial action plan to solve the issue across the country.

All-Italian launch from French Guiana lofts innovative environmental satellite
The 98-foot-tall (30-meter)
rocket fired its solid-fueled first stage at 10:50:35 p.m. French Guiana time
Thursday (9:50:35 p.m. EDT; 0150:35 Friday), instantly sending the launcher
into the late-night sky over the Guiana Space Center, a tropical space base on
the northeastern coast of South America.
The Vega’s first stage nozzle
swiveled to align the rocket with a trajectory north from French Guiana,
propelling the launcher faster than the speed of sound within 30 seconds as the
booster ramped up to full power with nearly 700,000 pounds of thrust. The first
stage consumed its pre-packed solid propellant in less than two minutes, and
high-power tracking cameras showed the booster dropping away as the Vega’s
second stage ignited to continue the flight into space.

You pollute, we clean, you pay: New laws mulled to tackle environmental
pollution
The government is exploring the
possibility of introducing a law to compel those who pollute to pay for the
cleanup operations and other damage that they cause. Energy, Science,
Technology, Environment and Climate Change Minister Yeo Bee Yin said the law
would be part of the proposed amendment to the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
Instead of focusing only on
individuals who had committed the crime, the new law would also look into
punishing companies that failed to monitor their scheduled waste disposal. “Polluters
must pay for the mess, but what if the culprits are lorry drivers?”
How do we force them to pay
millions in damages? They would be declared bankrupt and the government would still
have to pay for the mess. What we want to do in the new law is make the
companies who don’t monitor their waste pay for it; A press conference after

Exposure to Environmental Pollution Reduces Survival Rates of ALS Patients, Study Reports
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
(ALS) patients with higher levels of organic pollutants in their blood have
reduced survival rates, according to a study conducted in Michigan. The study,
“High plasma concentrations of organic pollutants negatively impact survival in
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,” was published in the Journal of Neurology,
Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.
A combination of genetic
susceptibility and environmental risk factors may contribute to ALS. The team
at the University of Michigan (U-M) ALS Center of Excellence had already shown
that ALS patients have higher blood concentrations of persistent organic
pollutants (POPs) — chemicals that remain for a long time in the environment
and can spread via food or air — compared with healthy controls.

Senators Make Sure Wheeler Knows They Oppose Changes to Mercury Rule
A handful of US Senators have
sent a letter to EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler saying they
strongly oppose a December, 2018, proposal that could “lead to the undoing of
the Mercury Rule.” The proposal finds that it is no longer “appropriate and
necessary” to regulate mercury and air toxic emissions from coal and oil fired
power plants. While the senators support the EPA’s decision to keep the 2012
Mercury Rule in place, they believe the proposal could lead to the weakening or
even undoing of the rule.
